At JK Counseling, clinical supervision is led by Joel Kouame, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) and Certified Anger Management Specialist. Joel’s supervisory approach is grounded in a systems-based perspective—recognizing how both internal and external forces shape our thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. He explores the influence of social constructs and the narratives we develop both interpersonally and intrapersonally, which can often create barriers to living a meaningful and fulfilling life. His goal is to help clinicians support their clients—and themselves—in identifying and dismantling these constructs to uncover their inherent strengths.
Joel views anger not as something to be avoided, but as a compass—an emotional signal that reflects what we love, value, resist, or reject. In supervision, he guides clinicians in understanding how anger and other dysregulated emotions can be powerful tools for insight and therapeutic progress. He fosters this growth while encouraging supervisees to develop and express their own unique clinical voice.
Joel began his clinical training at Adelphi University and has enhanced his practice through specialized training in EMDR, the Gottman Method, and Anger Management. He is also certified in Seminar in Field Instruction (SIFI) through NYU Silver School of Social Work, equipping him with the tools to provide structured, supportive, and developmentally informed supervision to emerging social workers.
His work as an adjunct lecturer and active presenter further enriches his supervisory style. Joel regularly speaks on topics including mental health interventions, culturally responsive care, and the impact of systemic oppression—bringing both practical and critical insights into the supervision space.
EMDRIA Consultant-in-Training
At JK Counseling, EMDR consultation is offered by Joel Kouame, LCSW, a Consultant-in-Training with EMDRIA. Joel’s approach to consultation mirrors the values he brings to clinical supervision—integrating the technical framework of EMDR with a systems-based perspective and a deep respect for each clinician’s unique therapeutic voice.
Many clinicians feel unsure about how EMDR fits within their existing clinical style. Whether a clinician is just beginning or seeking to refine their practice, Joel offers a space that is collaborative, supportive, and gently challenging. He encourages growth while affirming each clinician’s personal approach.
Consultation can be held via Zoom or phone—whichever method works best for the consultee.
All consultations are held virtually. Group consultation provides an opportunity to learn collaboratively and build connection with peers who are also expanding their EMDR skills.
To schedule a session, please use the Google Calendar link below to view available times and reserve your spot.
Joel is committed to helping clinicians strengthen their EMDR practice while remaining grounded in their own voice, values, and clinical intuition.
